At Church of the King we have always been committed to doing whatever is necessary to accommodate the growth God gives us. Over the years, we have tried to back up our commitment with actions.
In the fall of 1999, our church began with nineteen people gathered on a Saturday night at Three Rivers Presbyterian Church. Within three months, we moved into a rented building on Harry Lemons Road. God continued to add to our numbers, and we grew to a weekly attendance of over 450 in just one year.
As growth continued, we began looking for a facility which would accommodate the people God continued to send our way. In 2001, we acquired the present facility off Interstate 12 / Highway 59 and began remodeling. Converting a skating rink into the present day 1,000-seat sanctuary was a very successful challenge!
The year 2002 saw exponential growth with weekend attendance rising to 1,300. Meanwhile, we began to see God working through us to help other churches. That same year, we helped Pastor Jeff and Brandy Little start Milestone Church in Keller, Texas.
In 2003, as the number of people coming to Christ accelerated, a multimedia facility and numerous childcare rooms were added at our present building to facilitate the growth and ensure excellent care. We again had the privilege of helping with the birth of another church… Church of the King – Gulf Coast in Gulfport, Mississippi under Pastor Steve and Missy Farmer.
During the next two years, our church continued to experience exponential growth and weekend attendance grew to over 3,000 people by 2005.
In 2006, we experienced a milestone year… we launched our REACH Department, with CityREACH and GlobalREACH branches to facilitate both local and global outreaches; we purchased the City Campus building on St. Charles Avenue; and we helped launch Church of the King – Lake Charles under the leadership of Pastor Todd and Lisa Schumacher.
With our weekly attendance still growing, it became evident that we needed to make some logistical improvements. So, with the support of our church family, a new exit road was constructed to improve traffic flow after services. It has become clear that something “bigger” is needed to help accommodate our growth.
Since our inception as a band of believers, we have grown from one to five weekend services to try and keep up with the influx of new people, but we continue to fill up the services that guests are likely to attend.
Despite the growth Church of the King has experienced, this is only the second campaign we have conducted. The main reason we are building is to keep up with God and what He has been doing in our midst.
As a church, we are committed to doing whatever is necessary to accommodate the people God is bringing to us. We refuse to put out a sign saying, “We’re full. Go home.” Anyone within driving distance of Church of the King is who we feel God wants us to reach with the Gospel.
We have no idea how many people God will bring our way in the future, but we do not want the size of our “shoe” to determine how big our “foot” will grow. Already, our “foot” (our church family) is feeling pinched because our “shoe” (our church building) no longer fits. On many Sundays, there are few empty seats in the Worship Center.
Now, we are faced with this exciting and humbling opportunity to build a facility that will help house our church family and allow us to continue reaching people and building lives.
